6-2015 Camden, Maine

Our destination as we left Freeport was Camden, Maine.   We were planning to spend a few days at Camden Hills State Park.  Here it is on the map.

A closer view shows the bay that Camden is situated on—-Penobscot Bay.  There are hundreds of islands there and many smaller protected bays along the shore.

We have all heard how beautiful the coast of Maine is.  Well—we were not disappointed.  Actually — when we woke up the next morning and started to explore this area—-we could not believe how beautiful it really was.   These pictures cannot begin to show the real beauty compared to when you can really see it.    We first went into the small town of Camden.  Oh my—what a beautiful place.  I can see why they say that Mount Dora reminds people of a New England town.

Check out this little corner market.  established in 1868 and still selling bananas and milk!

The harbor is right behind Main Street.

Now in Camden—the Civil War was not even the War of the Rebellion.  It was the Great Rebellion!

The state park is located 1 mile north of Camden. It boasts having the second highest mountain of the entire eastern US coastline, second only to  Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, located north and east of here.  This is the view from Mount Battie.  You can see the town and harbor of Camden below.  It was actually breathtaking.  The colors of blue were stunning.  Now Celia—her favorite color is blue as you all know—our “blue” kitchen for 28 years—-REALLY loves the colors here.

Check out this house.  Can you imagine the view from this back porch for your morning coffee??

Would you like to hear a small world story?  Notice that Celia is wearing a Seaside T shirt in this next picture.  We were walking back to the parking area and someone else came up wearing the EXACT same T shirt.  They were from Atlanta.  They were with a couple from Jacksonville who was a fraternity brother at FSU with a high school friend of mine from Eustis.   You know how it goes—where are you from?—Dothan, AL but lived 35 years in Eustis, FL —- Oh—I had a fraternity brother from Eustis…yada yada

I so badly wanted to get some sunrise photos from this spot.  So, I made a plan.  Sunrise is at 4:55.  Getting up there would require a 1.5 mile walk straight up the mountain because you cannot drive up until after 7:00am.   So I figured we should get up at 3:00, leave at 4:00, hike for an hour to the summit, and then take beautiful sunrise photos.  Celia was even game to go with me —- flashlight and all. So, I woke up at 3:00 and went outside and could not even see one star.  The sky was completely clouded over so I assumed that there would be no nice sunrise photos.  I had to delay that adventure and pray that we can capture some sunrise pictures in Acadia.   Celia did not complain and quickly curled back up and went back to sleep.  She is a fine woman to put up with me  🙂

Last thing—-I was sitting here in the campsite by a fine campfire working on this blog post and noticed a full moon right after sunset.    Wow— so I quickly drove 1.5 miles up to the top of Mt Battie and got this picture.

Be sure to double click on this picture to get the best view of this beautiful site.   I was looking due east with sunset behind me.  How can anyone look at this and even consider that there is not a GOD!!   To me, there is nothing that brings me closer to my Creator and wonderful Savior than to sit here and look at this and contemplate what heaven will be like.  If His created world is this beautiful—-what could heaven possibly be like!!

  1. Glad you have made it to Maine. Looks like you are going to get great weather after tomorrow. I know exactly where you are. Loved the full moon picture from Mt. Battie. Aren’t those small world stories great!!!. I’m sure you know that you are right around the corner from The Hedes in Northport. Have a safe Fourth of July weekend and enjoy Arcadia National Park. Don’t forget to visit the bridge and fort I told you about right on US 1 in Bucksport, Maine on your way to Arcadia. Fondly, Kaye and Otto
